Tuesday Efficiency #5

I realize that I'm rapidly falling further and further behind with these blogs...especially since I was actually off on Monday. I still have tons to blog about, maybe I can do them on Tuesday!

  • As usual, got up and showered
  • I did some laundry
  • I worked the ponies.
  • I went to Wal-Mart and bought some stuff. I also did something I can't talk about for professional reasons.
  • I bought groceries
  • I scrubbed the mold off of the walls in the dog room before moving them back into there. Here's a before picture.

  • I vacuumed the house.
  • I made dinner
  • I worked on a craft project
  • I went to bed.
I wasn't terribly efficient on Monday as I tend to be on Tuesdays. Maybe this Tuesday will redeem myself.

Dog Costumes!

I tried posting this before but my laptop keeps having fits and I don't know anything about HTML coding. I'm going to try again.

Dressing dogs up in homemade costumes are my thing. There's nothing that sends me into a fit of hysterical laughter faster than a dog wearing a costume. Or a cat for that matter. I love it. Animals in my house must be willing to wear a costume and suffer a little indignity.

Let's look back over the past costumes I've made.

This is Riley as a puppy at a horse show. I made a handmade costume using felt and dressed Riley up as a dinosaur. She was super cute, obviously! We won the dog costume contest. Who could resist her?

This is Riley as an ear of corn (a corn dog!). This was our first entry at the PetCo costume contest at Halloween. Riley won it. It was really decided here that detail is what does well. I stitched each of those corn kernels on the body. The ones on the party hat were done with magic marker.

For Riley's first birthday, I had a circus themed party. I made Riley and Roosevelt each wear 'clown collars'. They actually looked more like scrunchies but they were cute!
The next Halloween I decided that Riley and Roosevelt each needed to wear a costume as part of a group. Unfortunately, due to the 200+ hand sewn cotton balls, Roosevelt's costume didn't get done to go to PetCo. Riley went alone and won first place again! Roosevelt didn't mind wearing his costume!
Mary even got in on the action!

While Roosevelt did appear to be quite happy with the sheep costume, he didn't enjoy the penquin hat nearly as much. However, it was always good to cheer me up!

The third year of our PetCo Halloween costume entries was to be another cat and dog combination costume-a walrus and penquin. Unfortunately, Roosevelt was lost befor the costume could be completed. We finished the morning of lacking all the detail that my costumes normally have. Bess, the new cat, wore the costume. We got third place. Its difficult to beat a chicken wearing a costume!

After we moved to Pennsylvania, it became Mary's turn to wear the costume! I was on call during the costume contest at PetSmart so I sent Joe with his dog dressed as Sherlock Bones. They won second place!
My pet costume love affair isn't resticted to my own animals. I made this cute tie and shirt for Wampus, the temporary clinic cat, so he could attend the wedding of his owner, April. Wampus loves dressing up and showing off!
Randomly, one day, we dressed Sadie up in the sheep costume which of course sent me into hysterics. She was confused and probably hot.
Finally, my most recent victory! Joe and I went to Woofstock in Harrisburg last weekend. It was to raise money for various dog charities. It was hippie themed with a costume contest. In two days, I made the costume for Mary-tiedying and sacraficing a favorite pair of jeans for her. We also made a sign for Sadie but scratched it at the last minute. Mary won her class and won third place overall! We got a huge basket of treats.

And now, its time to start on the costumes for Halloween. I have an idea-Mary and Sadie will be dressed together. I think I might be on call again but if so, I may just suck it up and go. Joe can't handle two dogs. No way...

Tuesday Efficiency #4

Okay, so I know that its Thursday/Friday. And I know that I haven't posted any old posts up to this date. Hopefully, I remember to when I get around to it. I'm on Joe's computer now and I really intended to be in bed and not blogging. I had a ton of things to share but as usual formulated blogs on Tuesday while cooking and doing dishes and didn't actually get around to blogging them. Fingers crossed for some time to catch up! I have some big news to share but probably won't until things are more defiant.

Anyway, Tuesday...

  • Got up around 11am. This is what I get for falling asleep on the couch until about two and then being up for various reasons till 5am. At 5am, after 45 minutes awake in bed, I considered just starting my day. Or at least watching a  movie.
  • Took a shower
  • Started my laundry-including washing the shower curtain and sheets
  • Bought trash bags at the borough office
  • Went to Wal-Mart
  • Did some dishes
  • Made amazing parsnip soup and cherry pocket pies. The parsnip soup is creamy and has sort of a woody flavor but still is fantastic. The pocket pies need some work. They aren't sweet enough. Apparently, all of the sugar was left in the liquid which was left behind because it also contained all of the corn starch which was not starching anything.
  • Watched a movie
  • Sorted out all of the holiday cards while watching said movie. From Pinterest, I saw this idea of binding them all using metal book binder rings. I did this and its super cute! I also found some cards from clients that I received during vet school. Those meant so much then; they still do now. Thank a vet!
  • I visited with the ponies. To say I did anything, would be a lie.
  • I cleaned out the cat's litter pan and gathered up the trash
  • I started working on a project for a friend's birthday which won't be finished anytime soon
  • I started working on a birthday project for my boss
  • I walked the dogs with Joe
  • I made the bed
  • I put away the laundry
  • And then finally, I made notes on what I did so I could eventually get around to  blogging it.
Joe has me lined up to make an emergency dog costume. He wants to go to this dog festival which is hippie themed. They are having a dog costume contest and it was decided that Mary needs to dress appropriately. We haven't done anything. The thing is Sunday. I see lots of sewing on Saturday. Joe better oblige me.

Hope to get caught up on Monday...

Tuesday Efficiency #3

Okay, so I'm going to do this early.
  • Got up-raining
  • Called car repair place-left message and evenutally got appointment for Thursday
  • Called about my kitten-left message
  • Did some dishes
  • Made a loaf of banana bread-didn't have any salt to make guacomole, will wait on parsnip soup and cherry pies because of the large amount of leftovers in the fridge already
  • Laundry-three loads
  • Two blogs!
Now for the things I will do:
  • Tailor my new white coat
  • Watch a movie
  • Go to Wal-Mart for my prescription, some ingredients, deodorant?
  • Return my shoes to Target and maybe buy some bras
  • Get some shirts from Old Navy
  • Get dinner from Rillo's
  • Get trash together
  • Clean rabbit's cage and cat's litter pan
  • Who knows what the night may bring!

Admitting You're A Hoarder Is The First Step

OR-Why Canning Is a Dangerous Thing

I had a couple more creative titles for this blog. I can't remember them. Regardless, I'm minorly concerned about becoming a hoarder. If I had a deep freezer or knew how to can, we'd be in trouble. I always worry that with our three dogs, cat, rabbit and two ponies (and soon to be aquired kitten) that I'm on my way to becoming an animal hoarder. At least at this point, I can feed and adequately care for our animals. Joe always threatens that if I become one of the people on 'Animal Hoarders' he'll leave me. I threaten that if he leaves me I'll become one of those people. Its a vicious circle.
Regarding the canning, Joe and I always have a well stocked pantry. We'd have an even better stocked freezer if we had a deep freezer or I knew how to can. Here's the problem. When I go to the store, I purchase fruit that ends up going bad before I get around to eating it-generally about two weeks. This is because I purchase fruit on this principle-75% because its a good price, 15% because I should and the remainder because I intend on using or eating it. I typically don't. So when I can, I've been cutting it up and putting it in the freezer. Or baking banana bread like I did today. (The recipe didn't have eggs in it so either its supposed to be like that or I copied it wrong. We'll see I guess.) I have some cherries that I picked through and will make little cherry pies with and some strawberries waiting for a pound cake. I would do more of this hoarding of fruits in the freezer if I had a deep freeze. If I knew how to can, it would be on for fruits and vegetables too.
The hoarding doesn't end with food either. If you look in our basement, you'd realize that we have a rather impressive collection of stuff for two young people that have had a mismash of household items. I claim we should have a yard sale, even if just one day, to get rid of some of the excess. Joe doesn't think we'd have enough. I claim we haven't looked hard enough. When we move, I'm going to make it my mission to clear the clutter. Its not that I'm opposed to it, just that I think I'll find a use for the empty horse treat container or the movie popcorn bucket we got at the drive in.

So all my hoarding aside, what else has been going on? Well, Joe and I went out on Saturday night. We ate Mexican. It was so good! I had a seafood chimichonga. Unfortunately, Mexican isn't a food that should be eaten before going out. My stomach was seriously not pleased. Despite even all the pepto bismol I ate too. After dinner, Joe and I went out to Dillsburg and to Haar's Drive-In. We saw Cars 2 and Super 8. Both were good. We had to sit in the car to watch though. I had set up the lawn chairs trying to avoid the cars in front of us and just when I was satisfied, some bitch in a Land Rover pulled in front of us.

Joe and I went out and drove Nell on Saturday morning before the farrier came. I drove Nell first and didn't use a whip. She did really good so I was pretty happy. We went out yesterday  morning too and tried to repeat the same thing. Except that Nell decided to have none of it. She was doing pretty good but then she spooked and started jumping up and down. I didn't bale this time and managed to get her stopped. I don't know what's going on with her. Its frustrating.

I've had some pretty frustrating cases lately at work. Mostly people not wanting to do what I wanted them too or things not turning out the way they should. The owner of the dog that I diagnosed (or at least strongly suspected) with lymphoma decided not to come back to us because she wasn't happy with how her dog was treated. There were some unfortunate issues however, I feel in the grand scheme of things, I did right by that dog. Sorry those tests took so long and were so expensive. I had a blocked cat on Wednesday and the owner elected to treat it. And its bladder ruptured so we ended up euthanizing it. Sad. I saw a dog that the owner was convinced had a tumor and I concurred. It was pale so I suspected that it was bleeding into its belly. The owner understood and I suggested radiographs and maybe a belly tap. They took the dog home and it died overnight. Then the owner accused me of not wanting to do anything. I saw a cat that had been hit by a car (suspected) that had a leg broken in two places and I think a broken back. It took the owner a while to decide to euthanize the cat. Ugh. Come on people. Luckily, the tail mass that TH would have referred, looks great!
On Thursday, I got called out to a calving. I'm horrible at calving because I'm 5'6" and have short arms and poor hand strength. Unfortunately, many of our clients are also this height making them less than useful. We struggled and struggled to get the head up and around. Eventually, we did get it up but after I called TH for his long armed assistance. I couldn't get the last leg and within a matter of seconds of him being there, the calf came flying out. These farmers are very good and very independant. Its the same place where I tried cutting the botched roll and toggle. These farmers roll and toggle their LDAs. I cut the cow and found tons of adhesions. They admitted the RT did not go as planned and this was obviously why. I sewed the cow up and said to ship her.

I'm not sure what else is going on. Joe and I have been doing the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace stuff. I want to save money! Joe isn't convinced I'm into it but he's totally wrong.

Pinterest is still my obsession. I've been cooking quite a bit off of it. With little success. Cinnamon roll pancakes (burned the cinnamon roll filling), cookie dough brownies (couldn't get the cookie dough to set up-probably because I used margarine), shortbread carmel bars (too crumby) and cheesy potatoe casserole (not cheesy enough and don't use as much panko!). I haven't made many of my pinned craft projects. I have a quilting project in mind first AFTER I fix my huge white coat! That's this afternoon!
