- woke up about 9:30 and was informed that I had to take care of the dogs. Ugh. Tuesday is supposed to be my day off from that too.
- took care of the dogs
- started laundry-ended up doing three loads
- went out to work the ponies. Cody's hooves are horribly broken up. He had a small scrape at his coronary band that I hosed off and cleaned up. Couldn't catch Nell so I cleaned my tack trunk and left.
- bought groceries at Saylor's in Newville
- got lunch at Sheetz. They are opening one in Newville and they were having a test run. We got some invitations at work. I had a sub which wasn't very good. Anyway, they don't have Sheetz in the Mid-West and I continue to be completely fascinated by it. They have hot food there that you order via touch screen. I get gas there a lot too. So what's the big deal about one opening in Newville? Newville has virtually nothing. The only gas station is at the grocery store. No fast food places so pretty much the grocery store is the only place to eat. There is a hardware store, vet office, doctor's office, dentist's office, tire place, and some other random small businesses. We needed the Sheetz.
- unloaded groceries and finished my lunch. Shortly there after, I was violently ill. It was horrible. Had I been a horse, I would have been thrashing around so bad you would of considered euthanasia.
- changed the sheets on the bed
- took a 2 hour nap (It was fantastic!)
- made spinach artichoke dip
- did dishes
- made dinner-baked chicken, rice and green beans
- made brownies
- did half the dishes again
- walked the dogs
- got together the trash
- framed a picture
- started blogging
- pissed off my laptop
- showered
- continued blogging on Joe's computer because mine continued to be very angry
- now I will brush my teeth and go to bed

The Best Quiche Recipe Ever!
...Or How To Clean Out Your Refrigerator...
My laptop made a rare journey downstairs. Rare as of this summer because of the serious overheating problem which causes my laptop to be carefully perched on a tin of tacks. And the dogs constantly trip over the cord resulting in a couple of laptop to floor crashes.
Joe and I spent yesterday night and this morning riding out Hurricane Irene. As far as what we got was some stronger than usual wind and some rain. These things kept me up all night. No major damage though which is good. The dog room leaked...of course.
But this blog isn't about riding out storms, or earthquakes. Apparently there was one earlier last week which I completely missed being in the grocery store. I did think I felt an aftershock on Friday morning-my light flickered and there was a hanger which danced in the closet without clothes.
Okay, so this is about making quiche. With a small amount of preparation (i.e. having a refrigerated or frozen pie crust available), you can make a great quiche! This also assumes you have one cup of dairy and three eggs present in the refrigerator too.
The first thing is let your crust thaw or come to room temperature. Blind bake it-generally 450 degrees for about 10-12 minutes. Be sure to either use pie weights or poke good deep holes all over with a fork.
Now you can make your filling. For me, I clean out the fridge-half a bag of spinich, onions, garlic, some chopped bacon, mushrooms-and I cook these. These go into a mix of three beaten eggs and 1 cup dairy. I tend to use 1/2 cup each milk and heavy whipping cream or buttermilk or half and half...something like that. I used ricotta once and decreased the amount of liquid. Add your seasoning-salt, pepper, whatever you like. And some cheese is always good. Then pour your filling into the pie shell. It will be very, very full so put your crust on a lined cookie sheet. Back into the oven at like 350 degrees for about an hour.
The quiche is done when the center is set and a knife comes out of the center clean. And that is the best quiche ever. I don't like quiche because I don't like eggs but Joe loves it. It does always smell good though...
Pinterest continues to lure me in and entice me with yummy desserts and food. That and anger me with posters advocating that nothing is as good as being thin and that I shouldn't eat that cookie. I ALWAYS should eat that cookie! Anyway, I made Cinnamon Roll Pancakes which were good but I failed to make the cinnamon filling thick enough causing the first pancakes (Joe's) to be delightful and the last ones (mine) to be comprised of carmalized (burnt) brown sugar and not so good. The recipe also only makes like 4-6 pancakes which they advocate only eating one or two of... The other thing I made because I didn't have enough brown sugar for cookie dough brownies was Carmel Crumb Bars. They are good, they are easy to make but could use a chocolate drizzle. These are the things that I learned when making them-1) don't reserve too much dough for the crumb part, 2) use dark brown sugar and 3) maybe cook the carmel longer. I think they took 40 minutes to bake too.
In addition to baking, Pinterest has me doing more crafts. If I can start projects upstairs and work on them in front of the TV, it seems like a lot could get done. Currently, I am working on a denim rag rug. I'll post a how to and pictures (for pinning!) when it gets further along. There are things that I have learned about this too (thimble, thicker thread, curved thicker needle-maybe one I use to sew up cows!).

Tuesday's Efficiency #1
This will be the title of all my Tuesday blogs that document how efficient I was on my day off. Sad to say that this was not one of my better days. I was in a bad mood all day and still am. But here is a running tally of how my day went...
- got up later than I would have liked but earlier than I would have liked as well
- showered
- read some of my book
- worked the pony that continues to be a brat
- bought some beer
- bought some horse feed for Cody. Omelene 200 which is a sweet feed and 14% protein. Nell gets none.
- went to Wal-Mart were they did not have an appropriate trash can for said grain
- went to Lowe's and purchased an inappropriate trash can and promptly regretted it (I'm going to return it tomorrow.)
- went to the grocery store where it was too dimly lit and I couldn't find lemon cake mix
- missed an earthquake
- got gas in my car
- ate the chinese I got at Giant
- put a pot roast in the crockpot
- worked on the four loads of laundry I had going
- sent Joe off to the dog park
- cleaned Joe's room and redecorated it as noted
- hid the beer I bought
- blogged
- read some more
- finished dinner-everything was dry and yucky
- asked to get some ice cream-Joe's response was sure followed by him going upstairs despite my request to go in 15-30 minutes. 45 minutes later he asks about it and I was in no mood to go anymore.
- cleaned the cat box and gathered up some garbage
- walked the dogs
- put away my laundry!
- blogged
Redecorating and Various Things
Hello All!
I thought to myself a little bit ago that I was going to try to blog at least twice a week. Maybe on a Sunday while Joe is at the dog park and I'm enjoying my dog free time and then again on Tuesday, again during dog free time that I impose on our animals. Needless to say, its been harder to do than I thought.
Let me think if there is anything exciting to tell you all about. I had a mass to amputate on Thursday. A big ugly orange sized mass that was necrotic and ulcerated at the end of a tail. No big deal if the dog wasn't a rottweiler and thus only had a nub to begin with. I asked TH what he would do and he suggested referring it but I was already in too deep and thought that the Os wouldn't have the money anyway. Surprisingly, it went off without much problems.
Sunday, Joe and I went floating with a bunch of people from work. It was good times even if the creek was cold.
The pony is still being a brat about driving.
I was very busy with errands today. There was also an earthquake centered in Virginia. I didn't feel it.
Tomorrow, I am the only large animal vet on. It should be fine. TH said he'd be around. AND TS comes back to work from materinity leave! I'm happy enough for the two of us!
Okay, so here's the deal. For about a year now, Joe and I have been sharing a bedroom which probably isn't a surprise. It was a combination of relaxing about being on call, Joe changing his work shift and just it being nice. I still don't have my clothes in the closets or drawers though meaning every morning I wake up and go back to my own room to change. I guess that's okay since Joe is still sleeping.
Anyway, Joe's room was sort of sparce so I decided to redecorate it. Here are some pictures!
Since it was Joe's room afterall, I decided to stick with boy colors-navy, blues and white but am also doing a bird theme which I had intended on doing in an earlier room. This is our new bedspread that I got from Target online. Its not as heavy as I thought it would be and is sure to end up on the floor in a pile anyway. There are some pillows I made on it. A trunk that I got at an antique mall at the end and for Joe and Leslie O'Hootenstuff to sit on. That's my 'new' lamp on the night stand. There's a mirror that I added too.
Close up of the pillows.
Dog wall with a portrait of Mary that I had painted for Joe for Christmas.
These are some pictures that I ordered from Etsy. They are printed on old dictionary pages and I spray painted some frames navy. Total the prints were around $20. Unfortunately, they were from Taiwan.
Before:
After: So, I couldn't find a picture of a lamp online anywhere that would look this awesome. We spray painted it white and I bought a different lampshade which I covered in navy fabric. Total cost including lamp-About $25. Probably less, if I don't count the glue (Elmer's school glue) and paint that I had. I had some fabric but ended up buying some anyway.
I'm pretty happy with my new room...even if Joe said it was pretty much the same except now it had an ugly lamp in it. Pin it!

Ponies MAY Be The Devil
In my brief professional career, I have come head to head with some terrible ponies. Okay, one in particular named Z. From what I lacked in experience with combining veterinary medicine and horses, I made up for with a knowledge of ponies and minis in general. I know that they are a pain in the butt! When they misbehave, they really misbehave! And twiches never quite fit like you want them too. Often, I do luck out. The minis that are supposed to be bad often respond very well to the 'on my knees' approach I take with them.
However, I never expected my own well behaved, well trained ponies to be bad.
Until today.
It was a typical Wednesday where I go out to work Nell after work. I had only stopped by to pet and groom them on Sunday because of the rain and Rug Doctoring on Tuesday. (And a smelly corgi that needed a bath ASAP!)
It was quiet at the farm despite a couple of cars parked around. I caught Nell after fooling her by petting the other horses in the pasture and took her to the barn. I got everything ready and then lunged her. She was being lazy about it which is actually pretty typical. So I went ahead and tacked her up and line drove her. She was doing okay with her normal turn around and go the other way or look at you routine in the 'spooky' corner. Against my better judgement, I tied her up again and hitched the cart to her. Nell did very well for this except for actually moving her and the cart away from the fence. All and all she didn't try to kill me or run off which was a dramatic improvement over the last time. I drove her with the cart and then got in after a few passes.
Nell was a little more spirited than I wanted which was okay because I was actually going to drive her for a rather long time in preparation for hopefully a trip outside of the ring this weekend. Everytime I asked her to trot, she did so a little faster than she should have.
Now it should be noted that they have mowed the arena which was needed. In doing so, they had moved a barrel out from the fence about six foot-enough for a cart to just get through. However, I was indeed wise enough to avoid this obstacle and stay on the inside of the barrel except for once at a walk. Nell did great. She also did great when I stopped her and opened a mailbox.
Anyway, Nell was just trucking along. The sun was playing in and out of the clouds and did so just as we made a turn at the far end of the arena. The play of light and shadows must have caught wrong in Nell's eyes behind their blinkers because she bolted! There was little time and little way of getting her stopped so head first she crashed into the barrel previously noted.
The cart shafts made a sickening crack (but were ultimately okay!) and Nell jumped away bucking frantically because the cart was still firmly attached (thank God!). I, however, was being bucked and bounced as the cart went airborne with every buck. I had already partially slid from my seat and decided that now was a good time to bail. So I did. Onto the hard ground. Nell at this point continued bucking around the arena narrowly missing the fence at the other end. I knew better than try to stop her. That's how people get hurt. I've seen it. I'm a vet. What ever happens, happens. I can fix it. Mostly.
So I stood in the middle of the arena near all the crap and watched as Nell went from the nastiest looking bronco with a cart attached to madly galloping to frantically trotting. I called her name and called out 'Whoa!' which you would think would bring people running but no, you'd be wrong. Eventually, I stepped out and she trotted around me and then finally stopped.
I lead her around once and past the offending barrel before unhitching and taking her for a walk. She was very winded. The fat pony.
I have some scrapes that are bruising on my knees, road rash on the side of my belly and one scraped elbow-its probably the worse. I eventually did clean up the elbow and eventually put on some expired antibiotic cream on the elbow and the road rash.
The unfortunate parts of this is 1) I don't know when I can hitch her again because I don't know when I can get some assistance (Joe), 2) I just ordered some new harness parts which need to be tried out and 3) my plans for taking her out on the road have been crushed.
Oh well. At least no one was hurt. Except my pride. (But I bought a purse to make up for that. That and the cow kick I received earlier in the day.)

Weekend
Well, not a lot going on around here this weekend. It rained all day yesterday and did some more today before becoming incredably humid. I like the rain. I wish it wouldn't be humid afterwards.
Yesterday, Joe and I went to Chinese for dinner and I suppose even though nothing else happened, that constituted our date. We were just hanging out around the house afterwards between rain storms when the neighbor comes pounding on the door. Apparently, her dog had gotten a face full of the neighborhood skunk. We gave instructions on bathing, eventually half a box of baking soda and our new bottle of peroxide and then finally I rinsed the dog myself. The whole house smelled like skunk but luckily seems to be mostly gone today.
Today, Joe did things off of his honey do list. Things such as hook up the TV and DVD player in my office, hang the medicine cabinet and wash Mary. Mary who after being bathed peed in the back room. I'm checking her for a UTI tomorrow but I'm certain she's just a bad dog. Now with the TV upstairs, I can watch DVDs and work on all those craft projects I have accumulated because of Pinterest.
Speaking of which, I am going to spend some money that I shouldn't and decorate Joe's room. I'm doing it in navy, white and blues since those are still boy colors but with birds. So far my ideas include: a navy and white comforter from Target, three bird prints from Etsy, the owl lamp mentioned in the last new post painted white with a new lampshade, a white mirror and some cloth bird pictures I will sew. Long term, I will have to work on a desk for Joe and maybe a headboard. A new matress would be well appriciated too. Maybe some curtains. Anyway, I know I shouldn't spend the money, I know there are other things I should buy or nothing at all but sometimes ideas just get the better of you. I'm going to hold off on some sewing stuff (minus the thread and maybe some fat quarters) until I get my current ideas situated out. Ugh time!

Bedtime Blog
Okay, real quick, something about the horses before I go to bed (and I want to show off how much I did today).
The other day, we were going to drive Nell and decided to let Cody out in the pasture while we did so he could get some extra time to graze. There was this weanling colt out there that is roughly Cody's size and Bo, this big Saddlebred thing that has a thing against the ponies. Anyway, we turned Cody out and he galloped up to the other two full sized horses. We expected all hell to break loose but it didn't. Cody made quick friends and palled around with them the rest of the morning. It was cute! I noticed today that Cody has rubbed a 3" section of his mane almost completely out where he is leaning through the fence when drylotted. Bad pony!
So here's a recap of what I did today:

- worked the ponies
- got the oil changed in my car at Wally World (Joe has been bugging me about this.)
- got my prescription filled and bought some things
- got my hair cut ($15 and 5 minutes)
- ate lunch and watched TV
- laundry (three loads)
- applied frontline to the neighbor's dog and talked way too long to her
- broke down the boxes I've been intending on throwing out
- got the cable fixed
- spent way too much time on my iPhone looking at Facebook and Pinterest
- regreted not having time or the motivation to be as crafty as everyone on Pinterest (Damn you Amberle!)
- blogged
- watched more TV
- repotted a plant
- made dinner (pork chops, biscuits, broccoli, stuffing) and an instant cheesecake
- ate dinner
- got the recycling together and took it outside
- cleaned the rabbit cage
- cleaned the cat's box
- got the trash together and took it to the curb with the recycling
- watched TV
- walked the dogs
- showered
- blogged again
- now I will sleep in the ACed comfort of Joe's room-I turned it on as an oasis for him
Owls Are Now Getting Their Time In The Spotlight
This blog isn't just about owls. I mean owls will be mentioned in it but there are lots of other things that will be discussed as well. This is my list: work, emergencies, wedding, crafts, fair, ponies, owls, date night!
Okay, let's start with date night and we'll finish with work. So Joe and I have taken to going out the Saturday after paychecks if I'm not on call. The paycheck before last, Joe and I went to Red Lobster. I was going to wear my strapless sundress that I wore for graduation. It was a little crumpled but overall still looked okay. I put it on and was waiting to get into the bathroom when Joe came out and said that the dress wasn't flattering. Ugh. What a way to start a date night! Even though I really wanted to pout and cry and throw things at Joe (and probably rightfully should have), I sucked it up, put on jeans and we went to Red Lobster. I don't know if they still have it or not but they were having the Four Course Feast for $15 thing and it was worth it. I had potato soup, ceasar salad, a bunch of shrimp and then a brownie for dessert. I was stuffed. This past Saturday, we went out again for our date night. The day started with working the horses followed by getting Joe a new iPhone since his crapped out. I found out that AT&T gives a discount to veterinarians! Sweet! Then we did some clothes shopping. I was looking for a navy skirt to wear with a t-shirt I had but wasn't having any luck. At Kohl's I found some cute shirts for work and made Joe approve of them. He asked why I didn't wear long skirts because he thought they would look cute on me. He had found a long white one he liked. This was after I had tried on a peasent top (which I typically hate because invariably they make you look pregnant) and agreed to get that instead of the fancy t-shirt I wanted. I tried on the skirt and he wanted me to get it which I did but only after an agonizingly long time of looking for a shirt to go with it...which also ended up being a peasent shirt. Ugh. So for date night, we went to the Japanese resturant next to Giant. We sat on the hibachi side so we had dinner and a show. It was really good and reasonably priced. Then we made a stop at Wal-Mart for lawn chairs and home for a radio before going to Newville for the drive-in. Captain America which was good and Transformers 3 which was not were playing. It was a good but late date.
Okay, wedding really quick. I talked to my mom. She didn't give me an exact amount of money that they could help us out with for the wedding. (Of course.) But did agree to pay for little things here and there-so maybe I can at least get the deposits taken care of that way. HOWEVER, I have not done any further planning. I have no motivation to do so. Everytime I get frustrated, I throw my hands up and state that we'll just go to the courthouse and then I get mad because I really do want the big beautiful wedding. The leading theory right now is CE at Western States Veterinary Conference and then a Vegas wedding.
I entered two baked goods at the Shippensburg Fair-apple cake and peanut butter stuffed chocolate cookies. The apple cake won third place netting me a whopping $2! My mistake this year was baking it the morning of. It was still warm when I cut it so it fell apart pretty easily.
All of the problems of stopping and turning the right had disappeared and I was left with a nicely trained pony. A week off and this has sort of disappeared. She still listens okay but has also taken to deciding she doesn't want to turn, walk or trot as asked. She's not bad but last week when hitching her solo while she was tied to the fence, she freaked out and then tried to take off with the cart partially attached. Not a good situation. But practice, practice, practice. I'm hoping to get her in with a pony trainer for a day of pointers this fall.
Despite being busy, we had to test the processor so Meg and I gathered an assortment of items to x-ray. It was so much fun!
Crafts: As usual, lots of projects, not a lot of time. Mostly again because of my love for TV, which got fixed today. I did buy a bookcase at a yard sale which may help motivate me to be upstairs more in the evenings. Motivate me because I can bring a TV for DVDs up here. Anyway, as usual, lots of things planned including a quilt, quilting photos of animals, etc, etc. AND now Amberle has me started on this website called Pinterest which only feeds the fire even more. On it, you can find things such as craft ideas, projects, clothes, etc and 'pin' them to a virtual bulletain board. Apparently, you can do it from all over the internet but I don't know how. It would be really helpful when I'm trying to update Joe's room as it is void of decoration. Oh, this is where owls come in. So at the same yard sale where I bought the bookcase (which I think always has great stuff), I purchased an owl lamp. Its equal parts awesome and hidious. Well, judge for yourself.
Amberle suggested that if I painted it all white, it might even be trendy. I'm considering it. A very glossy white with maybe some navy accents as Joe's room is going to be blues and birds. He doesn't know this. Thoughts?
Rachel mailed me a tropical plant which I have continued to ignore. It didn't make it here in great shape and continues to live haphazardly on my porch. Its repotting is actually on my list of things to do today. I also got my oil changed, hair cut and had the cable man over in addition to my normal Tuesday chores-laundry and dishes as well as making dinner. I need to continue to do some cleaning upstairs though. Motivation Fairy!
That's the box---> as it appeared on my doorstep from Missouri. I'm not sure why you mail a plant, but its Rachel so hard to say what possesses that girl.
So now on to ponies. A little while back, we started breaking Nell to drive and it wasn't without its difficulties. Mostly because she refused to stop without looking at you by turning around and also because turning to the right was seemingly impossible. I was on the lookout for a cart when I happened to find one on Craigslist. It was in rough shape but fit Nell pretty well. That and the father of the girl that was selling it was this awesome equine vet! He gave me and Joe a tour of the facility and we had a great time. Anyway, Nell has been since hitched less than a dozen times to the cart and was making some good progress until last week when I was super busy.

So finally work. Two weeks ago, TH was on vacation leaving us even more short handed since TS is still out on maternity leave. She comes back towards the end of this month. We've been super busy on small animal and sort of on large-lots of health papers for the fair. Non-emergency wise, I've been dealing with a dog with high calcium. There are about five things that cause that and to figure out why, you need to run some expensive tests. I did and had no answers so I'm referring it for an ultrasound. I smell cancer. I hope they smell cancer too. Last Friday, I TB tested about 120 cows. I got stepped on and had a nice hoof shapped bruise on my foot. It was a very hot and somewhat poopy job. Last Thursday night, it was pretty light and I had only had one surgery that morning. Of course, I ended up adding in three somewhat complicated cases including a whelping dog. This pug was only 9 months old and had been accidently breed on her first heat. She came to me with most of a puppy hanging out of her. With much difficulty, I managed to get it out and we x-rayed the dog. She had one large puppy in her. I suggested we do a c-section because I wasn't certain she could have the pup on her own. While I was in there, I was going to spay the dog. So after we finished with appointments, Lisa and I did the c-section. We are quite the surgery duo. It went well for the bitch but her pup died shortly after. Lisa and I had done another 'emergency' spay one Monday on a cat for some dead kittens which I think were alive. Now oddly enough, that cat may have gone blind? I don't know.
Despite being busy, we had to test the processor so Meg and I gathered an assortment of items to x-ray. It was so much fun!
In terms of emergencies, I was on four days straight. I had four days straight this month too but have now swiched some things around and get Sunday off. Thursday was okay. Friday, I oiled a horse that didn't really need it. It went pretty smoothly. Saturday, I pulled a dead calf that had been in the cow for about two days before she started to have it-it had a twin born two days earlier. It went pretty smoothly despite the 100 degree heat. I just kept moving my chain and pulling. At midnight, I got a call for a beef cow having trouble. I found four feet and a head and was convinced that the calf was coming transverse but apparently it was twins fighting about who came out first. I had a hard time with it and then decided to do a c-section. Then couldn't get the uterus up to my incision even though I made it low for that reason. It was too heavy. At 2:30am, I called BF and he came and managed to deliver the two dead twins vaginally. I sewed the cow up and we went home and to bed at 5am. At 8am, I was called out for one of the tech's horses. It was down laterally when I got there and I was sure it was a bad deal until the horse got up and trotted over to greet me. I also saw a dog with diarrhea that morning. Needless to say, July will be a profitable month for me.
I guess that's it. I'll go sit around watching TV and not cleaning like I should until its time to make dinner. Maybe I'll repot that plant.
