The Misc. Things first....
Friday night I was happily asleep in my bed when I was woken up by some yelling. It was about 3:30 in the morning. I looked outside and it was these two guys (my neighbors) and these two girls arguing. There were about six or so other people standing around watching too. It was directly in front of my apartment. Apparently, the guys had the girls over after the club and had slept with them. When the girls tried to leave, they tried to leave with one of the guy's iPods and cell phone. They were arguing about that. Eventually, the guy called the cops on the girls and immediately the cops-four of them in two cars, were in the parking lot. I'm saying the guy wasn't off the phone yet when the cops pulled up so someone else must of called because of the yelling. The guys explained what was going on. The cops asked questions and ended up taking away one of the girls. And I watched all of this from my bedroom window. Its a good thing the cops showed up when they did. I would of hated to been the one to call them.
Several weeks ago, I got back my deposit on my old apartment. I may have mentioned that it was painfully small. I didn't exactly know why but had some good guesses. When I went to cash my check, I found an itemized list of the deductions. I paid a $580 deposit on the apartment and a $350 one for the dog that was non refundable. They deducted for cleaning, carpet cleaning and a wall charge per my lease. I think I got off easy for the wall charge considering the considerable damage inflicted by my dog. But then I was charged for a set of blinds-while the blinds weren't great, they were the least of the concerns. What about the screens that the cat ripped up? I was charged for the burner pans on the stove-I was too lazy to purchase new ones but would of figured that those were included in the cleaning fee. I was charged for a blue ink stain in the carpet. Really? Cause the whole carpet was trashed. It was trashed when I moved in two years ago. And I was charged for a patch job to the carpet when a pet ripped it up. Shouldn't that of been covered in the pet deposit? I feel bad for the person that moved in if the carpet didn't get replaced. It wasn't smelly and probably cleaned up decently but I know it was ripped to hell by the cat.
My goat for surgery has a slow death wish. While the other three goats belonging to my classmates are content to be goats, the one belonging to our group seems to develop a new problem everyday. A new problem which we have to think of differentials (causes) for. And possible treatments. And possible tests. She was fine minus a large sore on her udder. Then she had a high heart rate-nervousness. Then she was anemic. Today's thing was nasal discharge. I have to keep her alive to Thursday when I do surgery on her and then mercifully euthanize her. Poor nanny.
The New Dog!
Joe has wanted a new dog for quite a while now. He wanted a big dog. I did not. We didn't need another dog though we do have room for one. We don't have time for one with him sleeping all day while I'm at school. But I was open to the idea of getting a dog. Even though I'm totally not a dog person. And I got huge amounts of veto power even though it infuriated Joe.
We went to the humane society on occasion. We looked into rescuing a greyhound but at $200-250, we had to decline. We thought about rescuing a Weimarweiner. But they were pretty expensive to and way too needy.
Then I got an email advertising some research dogs in need of a home. They were Briards-a French herding breed. They had been used in research about blindness and used as a model for infantile blindness. A disease that they helped pioneer a cure for. These dogs had this blindness as a congenital defect. Joe and I went and looked at the two females that they had up for adoption-Mary and Paprika.
Everyone knows that Joe is prone to impulses. I knew when we went and visited these dogs that we were coming home with one of them. I refused to talk about it right after seeing them, knowing that we both needed some alone time to think about it. Later, Joe and I discussed it, weighed the pros and cons of getting one of these dogs and of each dog. I told Joe he had my input. It was his choice.
He decided on the dog named Mary, even though he felt guilty about Paprika. Mary is still a puppy-not quite 10 months old yet. She is partially blind-mostly in dim/dark light. She's about 40 pounds but we don't think she's done growing yet. She has massive paws! She's black with tan features and a wiry coat. She looks sort of like a terrier of some sort. She has adorable eyebrows or bangs as Joe calls them.
Never to do something part way when it comes with buying things, Joe went to the pet store and bought everything we need. A second crate has been bought off eBay. I ordered a book ..er training and a tag for Mary.
I know that having a puppy is going to be a struggle for both of us. (And Riley and Roosevelt too!) I know that I'll have to put in as much time with training as Joe. I know too that Joe's enthusiasium will drive him to learn and care for this silly dog. I hope that he can provide the good home that this research dog, this stepping stone to a cure of a human disease needs.
We get her sometime this weekend if her spay goes well. I hope they washed her first. She was a stinky girl!
