School Tour

So a couple of weeks ago, I walked into the office and TC asked me how much I liked kids. Despite a definite lack of babysitting experiences, I really like kids. Actually, if I wasn't a vet, kindergarten or third grade teacher would be my career of choice. Anyway, we had a group of Boy Scouts ages 6-8 that wanted to tour the office.
Immediately, I got some ideas of what I wanted to do. I necropsied a piglet saving the heart and kidneys. I made a couple of posters with the intention of making more. I ordered a couple of animal themed things from Oriental Trading.
Today was my big day. I did surgery and then got ready for my tour.
So I totally underestimated the insanity that is a group of young boys. Right away, I realized who was who in the group and that these boys were nothing like I was when I was 6-8 years old. Is it a boy vs girl thing? Is it the 22 year difference?
Anyway, the group shows up as we finish appointments but the lobby is still super crowded. I usher them into the euthanasia room and we start. We make a list of things that pets need to stay healthy. I go get Sadie and we listen to her heart. All while wearing way to big lab coats. (That aspect actually went over better than I thought it would.) Sadie, who normally loves children was mildly terrified. She was good but scared and ended up sleeping very hard on the couch later that night.
We moved on to X-ray, looking at rads of broken bones, bladder stones and pregnant dogs. A detour into surgery ended up with a long time of blowing up cuffs on intubation tubes. Who knew that would be so fun? Then for the pig organs. To which I was asked if they could touch them. WTF? Okay, here come the gloves. Then we played my game though I didn't expect the kids to read so well. Maybe I don't really know what 6-8 years old really means. After a brief discussion on the proper behavior around horses, Nell got to eat about a 1000 treats. She was nervous but no kids were injured. And she pooped which made their day. Finally, back up front to look in the microscope then gift bags all around.

Waiting nearly half a week has taken some of the shine off of this experience. I was pretty much devastated afterwards. Kids take a lot out of you. It was good times and I think everyone had fun. The adults told me so.
