MySpace-July 9, 2007-Horse Show Weekend

This weekend we had a horse show here in Columbia. Joe came down for it too and so combined there was alot going on...not really, I guess.
Mom came into town on Friday with the horses and I stayed out at the fairgrounds with her to unload the horses and work with them. We drove Opie some and he's really good. Joe came into town that night.
Saturday, I let Joe sleep in while I went out to the fairgrounds again to groom Mom's horses. Opie showed first and then Roxie and then Tinkerbelle. Unfortunately, in there Roxie decided that her stomach hurt, which can be really bad for a horse considering they have yards of intestines even if they are 200 pounds. We thought that we had got her feeling better and went ahead and showed her but a little after that she was sick again and worse than before. The show vet wasn't going to be there until the next day so I called the University-knowing that I would get a discount! And to my amazement of myself, everything that I had picked up about signalment and a good history came running out of my mouth as I told the vet on the phone about Roxie's colic surgury as a baby, her symptoms, the frequency of her colic-y episodes in the past, diet, the last time she pooped, etc. It was going to be another hour or so before they could make it out there so I got mom in the ring with Tinkerbelle and Joe and I kept Roxie walking since she really just wanted to lay down and roll-which means that her intestines could twist. Someone had some pain medicine and I gave her a small dose and the vets showed up-Dr.LaCarruba and Dr. Chambers (maybe, maybe it was Masters? I was having a hard time hearing.) They took the history again and Roxie's vitals-most of which were normal including good gut sounds. They went ahead and put a tube though her nose and into her stomach trying to reflux stomach contents, not getting many because of the tube size-very small-they went ahead and pumped some oil into her. Roxie was very good this entire time and I didn't look like a fool holding her. Normally, I choose the most docile horse to hold for something like this and end up looking like a fool because that horse decides to be horrible. The vets asked if I planned on going into equine and while still excited that I wanted to be in large animals, were slightly disappointed that I wanted to be a dairy vet. They said that I needed to be sure and take the equine ambulatory elective though when it got time for clinics. Because of my discount and having the vets come to us rather than us take her to them, the bill wasn't much over $100 and actually was less than what it would of been had we been at home and called our own vet, I'm sure anyway.
Disaster adverted, we drove Opie in the evening. He wasn't being as great as he had been the night before but was still okay. Joe got a very breif lesson on driving and decided due to lack of training and the somewhat large number of people in his class to opt out of driving the next day.
Sunday came and mom decided not to drive in any of the classes so we packed her up and she went home. Joe and I went to the mall and then hung out at my house. Joe tried to take a nap but was routinly awakened by my dog. Aww...Riley.

So this week, I am cleaning my house and packing. I think I'll go get my haircut now.
